Room 6’s Awesome Learning.

Room 6 have had an exciting and fun packed term. We have worked hard to do our best at all times and as a result we have experienced some awesome successes. We have learnt how to write a narrative and have recently completed stories that we have written collaboratively with our writing buddies. For this writing we used the Story Bird app. Now, you may think, working with a buddy would be easy however we have discovered that it’s not as easy as you might imagine.  Firstly, we had to collaboratively answer those big ‘story making questions’ like ‘what characters were going to be in our story, where was the story going to happen, what would be the Big Problem in the story and how were we going to solve the problem? All of Room 6 students have their own Story Bird user name and password, so they can use this at home much like they do for Reading Eggs and Mathletics.

We have also had some great learning experiences outside of the classroom including our Cultural Day last Friday. We enjoyed the four activities that we rotated around which included Indian, Pasifika, Maori and Brazilian. The day was highlighted by our shared lunch including a healthy hangi meal. Thank you to all the whanau that generously provided kai for our Cultural Day. We celebrated the true sense of cultural diversity by proudly coming together as a school community to acknowledge our differences, our uniqueness and the things that unite us as a community.

Needle and Thread

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Fabric and Fibre Art lessons.

Here we are all ready for our Mini Olympic Day dressed in the colours of the country we are representing. We have made our gold coin donations to our Kids Can fund raiser. We all had an awesome day competing in a number of fun activities and earning points for our adopted countries.

News From The Karawha Team

Recently, the Karawha Team have had a wonderful time both in the classroom and education outside of the classroom. Last Wednesday, Room 6 and 7 had the pleasure of attending the Christchurch Primary School Cultural Festival. As we watched we felt very proud of our wonderful Linwood North Kapa Haka Group and Matua Anton. They looked marvellous in their new Kapa Haka uniforms, their Pasifika uniforms are always uplifting and their own traditional clothing from their specific cultures. We embraced the true sense of acknowledging the diversity of the different cultures that our students and their families come from. We would like to especially thank Kay, Mr Shimasaki’s Mum and Stalin, Safina’s Dad for accompanying Room 6 and 7 on this trip.

The following day, the Karawha Team joined the rest of the school and participated in our school’s Mini Olympics. We all thoroughly enjoyed this event as we celebrated the values of both the Olympics and our Linwood North School. We participated in a wide variety of novelty activities like tossing the gumboot, tug of war, javelin and discus hoop throws. It was our own special version of what it means to be a champion while still having fun and being part of a team.

Lastly, I would like to mention the creative Artworks that are emerging from each of our classrooms. In our weekly Visual Art Lesson this term we are learning about Fabric and Fibre, which includes acquiring the skills of both weaving and needle and thread work. It is an art in itself to just thread the needle let alone stitch along a line however I am pleased to report that Karawha students have taken this challenge on with great enthusiasm. I think these photos speak for themselves.
